When heavy poaching in the 1970s and 80s decimated Kenya’s wild black rhinos—dropping numbers from 20,000 down to a devastating 1,500—the government moved the remaining highly vulnerable individuals into Solio’s secure boundaries.

• The Modern Population: Today, the 19,000-acre sanctuary safely holds a thriving population of over 200 black and white rhinos.

What is a “Crash”? Rhinos are typically solitary animals, but white rhinos can be remarkably social. Because of the sheer density of animals at Solio, it is one of the only places on Earth where you can regularly see a “crash”—a social group of up to 40 rhinos grazing peacefully together in a single field.

Elephants are massive ecological engineers. Because the 19,000-acre wildlife zone is completely enclosed by specialized fencing to optimize anti-poaching security, elephants were intentionally kept out. Without the destructive feeding habits of elephants breaking down trees, Solio’s pristine Yellow-fever acacia forests and riverine woodlands remain perfectly preserved. This pristine canopy provides the exact dense, woody browsing material required to sustain the highly endangered, hooked-lipped black rhino.

Aside from elephants, the plains are heavily populated. Predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam the grasslands, hunting healthy populations of Cape buffalo, reticulated giraffes, plains zebras, elands, and rare Beisa oryx.

3. High-Acidity Yellow Forests: A Birdwatcher’s Dream

The heart of Solio is carved out by a massive, central wattle forest and a seasonal river system that opens into sweeping marshes. This highly specialized habitat attracts over 300 recorded bird species.

The balance of swampy wetlands and tall acacia canopies makes it a prime hunting ground for large raptors and colorful valley specialists alike. Birders can expect reliable, up-close encounters with majestic grey crowned cranes, secretary birds, long-crested eagles, martial eagles, and dazzling multi-colored kingfishers.
